Dance away those love handles

September 29, 2012

salsa dancingFor a lot of Americans losing weight is a challenge, the idea of spending hours a week at some awful gym is like pulling teeth. If you are one of those people who hates going to the gym, you should try salsa dancing to get in your cardio. According to Latin Dance Pro, a 200 pound person burns 528 calories an hour salsa dancing.

What is great about getting your exercise in as dance is that it doesn’t even feel like a work out. You are going for the fun of dancing instead of mindlessly running on a treadmill for an hour. This is also an activity that anyone can do, even if they are out of shape. It is also a great date idea for spending time with your significant other or meeting someone new if you are single. I have only a few times ever gone to the gym with a girlfriend and spent time together, even if she was as into fitness as I am.

Review: Salsa Night at Klondike Kate’s

I went to a salsa class on Monday, hosted by the UD Ballroom Dance Team. I paid a $5 cover at a bar in exchange for a 60 minute salsa class. It was very popular, maybe 30 to 40 people showed up, so it got pretty crowded. They gave a good intro for the new people and showed a few more advanced moves for the more experienced. There was a good mix of men and women. It was a younger crowd, most people where in their 20’s or 30’s. It looked like at least 30% if not 50% of the people who showed up were single so it is ok if you don’t come with a dance partner. All in all it was a ton of fun and allowed me to get a second workout.

The Analysis: How many calories did I burn?

Since I weigh around 175 pounds and we only spent two thirds of the time dancing (and a third watching and learning), I burned approximately 308 calories while having fun. I plan to go back as often as possible!
