There are many reasons to follow the paleo diet: weight loss, higher energy, improved immune system, and lower odds of getting many diseases. Now you can add avoiding arsenic poisoning to the list of benefits from eating paleo.
A recent Consumer Reports investigation discovered alarming amounts of arsenic in rice. They found a “worrisome” amount of arsenic in almost every rice product tested. This is a big problem because arsenic is a know carcinogen and can have a very negative impact on children’s health.
Brown rice has higher levels of arsenic than white rice. This is because there is a higher concentration of arsenic on the outer layer of the brown rice which is polished off to create the white rice.
Asians and Latinos are more likely to be affected by arsenic due to higher consumption of rice products. It was found that people who eat rice have 44% higher arsenic in their body than people who do not.
