Most people who have ever gone on a diet think that losing weight is hard. They are both right and wrong. They are right that the diet that THEY went on is difficult for losing weight, but they are wrong because if you chose to follow the paleo diet then weight loss is easy. Why does following the paleo diet make weight loss easy? Because it lowers your insulin.
What does insulin do?
Insulin is a hormone that is responsible for lowering your body’s blood sugar (glucose) level when it gets to0 high. Insulin does this by storing glucose as glycogen in the muscles and liver. The problem arrises when you have more glucose in your blood than can be stored in your muscles, the extra glucose is sent to the liver and converted into triglycerides and stored in your fat cells. Insulin is also responsible for preventing the use of fat as energy and by stopping the release of glucagon. Since insulin prevents your body from using fat as energy it makes fat loss very difficult.
What raises your insulin level?
Insulin is released in response to eating food. Eating any food will cause your body to release some insulin, but foods that are high in sugar and carbohydrates will raise your insulin much higher. Carbohydrates are converted in glucose and enter the blood stream. Refined carbohydrates such as the ones found in bread and pasta are digested and converted into glucose much faster than complex carbohydrates that are found in vegetables. Eating refined carbs will result in a sugar spike and is followed by a spike in insulin.
Why is high insulin level bad?
Chronically high insulin can cause many problems including type II diabetes and leptin resistance. Leptin is the hormone that is responsible for making you feel satiated after a meal. If you become leptin resistant due to high insulin you will be hungry all the time. Have you ever tried dieting while hungry all the time? Sounds like a plan doomed to fail.
How can you lower your insulin lever?
Stop eating junk food. Don’t eat anything with grain in it, which mean bread, pasta, oatmeal, crackers, and chips. Cut out all foods with added sugar, which means pretty much all processed foods. Stop eating and drinking dairy. Milk has been shown to increase insulin. Stop drinking diet sodas, even though they don’t have any calories, they will still increase your insulin.
Only eat real foods like eggs, beef, chicken, seafood, fruits, vegetable, nuts and some oils (macadamia, olive, avocado, and coconut). Intermittent fasting has also been shown to lower insulin and make you more insulin sensitive.
The average American diet has so much refined carbohydrates and added sugar that it is no wonder two thirds of the country is overweight or obese. Losing weight has been shown to increase your insulin sensitivity which will make dieting even easier. Instead of fighting an uphill battle by eating foods that will raise your insulin and make you hungry, switch to a healthy paleo diet which makes weight loss easy.
